Catching Up with Vander Woude Dairy

Simon Vander Woude reflects on his family’s dairy, its commitment to sustainability, and the role renewable energy plays in the farm’s future.

Vander Woude Dairy in Merced County is home to approximately 3,200 milking cows and a manure digester developed with Maas Energy Works. The system captures methane and converts it into renewable natural gas for use as a low-carbon transportation fuel. Supported by California’s Dairy Digester Research and Development Program, the project has reduced emissions while creating additional value from manure already produced on the farm. For Simon, the project represents a practical investment in efficiency, environmental stewardship, and the long-term future of the family dairy.
